For not super rational reasons I wish I had 4WD in my Suburban. I do not, so of course I’m searching for one.
(I might take it hunting the 1-2 times a year I got; my parents like to borrow it 1-2 times a year to go to Nebraska where it would be nice to have; but no REAL 4WD need.)
So along comes this:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Basically my Suburban except one year newer (mine is 2015) , 4WD, brown interior (mine is black) , power runnin g boards (mine are fixed in place) , and 22" wheels ( I actually got rid of those exact wheels on mine to go down to 20"). T hey even have the same WeatherTech mats! Mileage is almost exact as well.
Pictured above - mine.
So, what do you think the chances I can drive in, offer them a few grand for the difference , and walk out with 4WD? I’m pretty sure 2016 means I get Android Auto as well, but I’m hoping they don’t know that.
Less important (ok, maybe somewhat important) - should I?
Any well known issues with the 4WD on these?
I would definitely keep my 20" wheels and let them keep the 22".

Spending money to go from a well-known (and liked) vehicle into an unknown but at best slightly better one? Nope!

That brown interior is wonderful, but it looks like they used some greasy cleaner on every square inch of the interior. I can feel the stickiness just looking at it, but maybe the camera is just giving that effect. Also those are some really in depth photos.
Seems like a good deal, not a necessary one but if we only bought what was necessary, we’d still travel by horse and carriage.

Might as well try. I don’t really see 4wd as anything but a benefit. At this size and weight class you don’t stand to lose anything in terms of mileage or performance. the only reason not to would be for trading the devil you know for one you don’t. i.e. you know what your suburban’s history is and what it needs, this would be a fresh start on that process.

As someone who has driven 2-wheel drive trucks in Chicago winters for nearly 20 years ... why throw away a few grand?

That suburban is an early failed attempt at Cybertruck. Detroit fails.

Pretty sure Tesla would love to fail with Suburban sales numbers.

Again, if I wanted reasonable advice I’d ask my wife, not my online car friends.
If the exterior was brown you guys would all be behind me on this one...

Not worth it. If traction is a concern, better tires will go a long way. Keep what you have if it’s a good truck.

I adore that interior. There is a Suburban that parks near me at work with that interior and I may have drooled on it once or twice.
The excess can be wiped off with a towel before I sit down.

Yeah, the unknown history is the big, well, unknown. Granted I’ve only had mine for a little over two years, but I know it pretty well in two years and 45k miles.

Thetes apotential mymisding of my humorous point. But now I think about it, this could point to the surprise ready acceptance ahead of Tesla’s newest suit of armor.
Aside, how much would this change set you back? And is that worth the effort to get 4wd?

Did I mention I put down a $100 deposit for a Cybertruck?

I mean, we support whatever decision you make!
Speaking for myself, if I’m changing from RWD to 4x4, I’m getting an entirely different model. At the VERY least, if it must be the same model, one of a different generation, or newer facelift that has something to offer.
Identical-ish vehicles opens a looooot of opportunity for regret. Plus, you have a known commodity in hand. You HOPE that the other one is in good order, but you’re not really going to know until it’s too late...

I’ve got year old Michelin Defender LTX M/S tires. I don’t think they are specifically snow rated, but they get pretty solid reviews all around. I’ve never had to test the traction, anyone have those tires with input to share?

You did not! Opting for matte black color?

That interior looks spectacular in that color, didn’t even know that was an option. That alone should give you enough Jalop reasoning to do it, as long as you can swing the price difference.

It is a refundable deposit, so no idea yet if I’ll actually buy it or not. I didn’t pick options yet since I know they will change at least once before I would have to choose.

I wonder how much that position in line will be worth during the deliveries.

1. Resale value is worth it. Atleast here in the rust belt 4x4 is a must. There is at least a $4k to $ 5k difference between 2wd and 4x4 here in ohio for GMT9 00s. (I know that’s a GMTK2XX but you get it)
2. MPG and tow rating will be affected. More weight and drive train loss.
3. Yeah a good set of tire can help in snow and weather but this video alone shows why 4x4 (when engaged) is better

Keep what you’ve got. AWD/4x4 will get you going, good tires will be what stop you. Most of my time driving the grids are in 2WD, only in really shitty weather do I put the 4x4 on, and in most of that weather, people should stay home anyway.

Interesting, I didn't even think of that. I would bet the new electric arrivals by then will eat into the demand.

I wouldn’t bother if I were you, but if you insist, don’t let them walk away with more than 3 k.

1. I think it may be inverted in Houston - most Suburbans are not 4WD, and I think most people don’t look for it, especially in the high level trims. I was planning to try and play that card if I go in to talk - soccer moms want the 22" but don’t care about 4WD.
2. Yes, but pretty nominally at this weight class.

Good point.
I should be looking at 2018 / 2019 4WD Expeditions....

I am fortunate that I can swing the price, which makes the decision harder - I can, but should I?

Saw Nebraska and missed the Huston part lol
Bu t always worth the shot and I would play the mpg game then. "Its going to get less because of the 4x4" or something like that

Ooooh....Though honestly, with an hour commute each way on a daily basis, the 1979 would not be the best choice. I have gotten soft and used to my creature comforts, and the 2015/201 6 is a really comfy highway cruiser.
